How to Link Aadhaar and PAN

Wondering how to link your Aadhaar with PAN? read on

Aadhaar is ubiquitous for Indians these days. Be it subsidies, be it Bank account, be it mobile phone SIM card, everywhere Aadhaar has stepped into our lives and it has become the non-living family member of almost 114 Crore (1.14 Billion) Indians covering about more than 90% of the adult population in India. Government of India is going ahead making quoting or linking of PAN mandatory for all the welfare schemes of the Government and other citizen centric centric services of the Government. Aadhaar is made part and parcel of the governance in India. Though there may be some questions regarding the privacy concerns because of the huge data that UIDAI maintains as part of the Aadhaar, the larger picture is however that Aadhaar has effected positive changes in curbing leakages in almost all of the schemes it has been associated with. The Government of India in a bid to keep a check on the practice of duplicate PAN cards and thus filing of duplicate returns by same individuals on different PAN cards resulting in a loss of tax revenue to the kitty, has come up with a rule mandating the compulsory linking of PAN with your Aadhaar card. The last date for the linking of Aadhaar with PAN has now been extended till August 31st, 2017. The Government of India also made it clear that, once you have filed your return (read our guide on how to file E-Filing Income Tax Return), it will not be processed unless you link PAN with Aadhaar. If you have recently applied for Aadhaar, you can just mention the enrollment ID in the space provided in the Income Tax Return Form for AY 2017-18. Now, let’s see how to link Aadhaar number with your PAN. There are two ways in which you can do it. First let’s see the linking of Aaadhar and PAN through SMS.

Linking of Aadhaar with PAN through a simple SMS:

1. Pick your phone, compose a text message

“UIDPAN [SPACE] <12-digit Aadhaar Number> [SPACE] <10-digit PAN Number>”

and send it to either 56161 or 567678. For example if your Aadhaar is 123456789123 and your PAN is AAAPN1234X, then type “UIDPAN  123456789123 AAAPN1234X” and send it to 56161 or 567678.

2. If your PAN and Aadhaar details match, you will receive a confirmation message that your PAN has been linked to Aadhaar.

3. In case the details of Aadhaar and PAN do not match, you will receive a following message “Your request could not be processed as details for PAN {XXXXXXXXXX} do not match with Aadhaar {XXXXXXXXXXXX}. If it is so, you will have two choices: either try linking through online facility (scroll down) or try changing your details either in PAN database or Aadhaar database (will be covered in a separate post) so that both match and there is no discrepancy.
